Sounds as if it will die at any time. September 6, 2010 Arden Warner It looks nice on the shelf. I fear that was my main attraction. But I didn't have much else to compare it with. It may be blowing as fast as the specifications imply it will blow. It just always sounds to me as if it may be going to stop. I wish it had a stronger sound. It's an uneven sound. I expect a more knowledgeable operator than I, to tell me that it's not getting fuel. Or something like that. I'll likely keep it. Had I HEARD it operate before I purchased it, I would likely have looked further.
Easy, lightweight but tepid performance September 3, 2010 Domestic Gnome (Cornwall, CT USA) Arrived intact.
Out of the box and assembled within 15 minutes per good instructions.
Oiled and gassed.
Fired on the first try - following the directions handily located on the engine cowl.
Comfortable mesh back-pack with padded straps.
BUT...pretty tepid performance. Read the Consumer Reports article and chose this as best combination of performance and price - decent value. Replacing a Green Machine from 1983 - which NEVER required servicing and finally just quit (Jeez - 27 years of service and the damn thing gives out - can't anybody build anything anymore?).
The Green Machine would blow shingles off your roof. The Troy-Bilt produces a zephyr by comparison - kind of like a hair dryer on high. But for non-commercial, residential use, it's OK.
According to the specs, this one produces "up to 150 mph." Sorry, that just ain't true. Again, it's OK.
Also, it's 4-cycle and fear that the convenience of not mixing the oil and gas is outweighed by having to check the oil level all the time - at least until I get a sense of how long a full oil tank lasts. Overall, it's OK.
VERY NICE UNIT August 3, 2010 Charlier I have used this unit 5 times now and EVERY time it has started on the first pull. It is not real powerful, but I knew that prior to purchasing it. The blower tubes are a little short (I am 6' 2") and the manufacturer has no lengthening solution for the problem.
All in all, I am satisfied.
valve issue June 11, 2010 Andrew P. Thierry (Pa.) After 10 hours of use, my unit suddenly stopped running. When I took it to the nearest service center, 20 miles away, I was told the valves need to be adjusted every 10 hours of use. This service is not covered under warranty. Steer clear of this unit.
Died in three minutes March 21, 2010 M. Wills (RI) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It started easily enough, it actually wanted to run on the first pull in the "1" position. I followed the 1-2-3 start up routine and away we went. It stalled in about three minutes and that was the end of it. Over the next couple of hours I got it to start a few more times with rigrous cord pulling attempts only to have it stall over and over.
I even went as far as draining the gas (the gas I filled it with was about three weeks old) and drove down to the station and filled it with fresh 91 octane. Same problem. All in all I wasted about 5 hours of my day between driving to the local Lowes to pick it up, dinking with it to try and make it run, and now it will be returning to where it came from this afternoon.
While it was running I can tell you it's not very powerful. The flex tube should be longer to make it easier to position across your body so you're not only blowing the leaves from just the right side ( it's a stretch to get it across the front of your body and I'm not a big guy). It was fairly quiet and smoke free but that's about all I can say that is positive about this unit. I have an electric Toro ultra that is really only slightly less powerful and over one hundred dollars cheaper. For a 32cc 4 cycle system it should be much more powerful. I wasn't expecting commercial grade power but this is pretty weak.
