5 out of 5 stars Perfect Match   September 5, 2010

I had 2 steel tubs with a couple of dings on them. Locally, I couldn't find the correct color (biscuit). I had great success with the rust-oleum product. There are two paint cans to mix (to make the porcelain epoxy). Apparently, there is enough to do a complete tub. I only needed to repair a couple of dings so I mixed a small amount and saved the rest. The working time is long enough to apply 2-coats. It matched perfectly.

My bathtub was worn, chipped and stained when we moved in. It now looks shiny and smooth. This product will ONLY work if you follow ALL the steps for proper preparation of the tub, which are clearly written on the package.. Remember, too, that you must not use the sink/tub or whatever for 3 DAYS. We planned the work around a weekend away. Total project time, including shopping for supplies-- about 5 hours. Well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars great product!   August 23, 2010

This item was purchased when we redid our daughter's bathroom. The tub was sound, but old and stained. We bought 2 kits to do a bathtub and surround - both made of fiberglass. The fumes when mixed were noxious, even with window open and large fan ventilation. Do spend the extra to get a quality small (4") roller - I did not like the brush strokes when using a brush, and less expensive rollers will come apart and leave small pieces of debris in the finish. Overall, the finish looks great - very bright white, and seems to be durable - it has been on the tub for >1 month with no obvious defects. It was a great solution for a new-looking tub without the hassle of ripping out and installing a new one. So far, very pleased with the result.

5 out of 5 stars 30 year old tub & tile look like new!   August 22, 2010

I purchased this product for the bathtub & surrounding tile for an older investment property-the bathroom tub & tile would not come clean no matter what kind of cleaning product I used. Tub & tile had mold, mildew, caulk coming out-a complete mess. Got several quotes from the "1 day bathroom renovation" companies & they were all between $3500 & $6000.00! Did not want to spend that kind of money. Did research on google, found Rust-Oleum kit & read the reviews. Hired a professional handyman company to do the refinishing because I don't have any kind of a sander & I know this is an important step. Now, the bathtub & tile look 100% brand new-the finish is gorgeous! Professionals advised me to use only Scrubbing Bubbles cleanser-they warned that anything abrasive or any product containing bleach were an absolute no go if I want the finish to last. Completed project was around $600. including 2 Rust-Oleum kits purchased from Amazon. The kits were far less expensive than the cost at a large national "builder supply" store. The whole project took 2 l/2 days to complete (dry time between coats is critical.) I'm thrilled with the results-if it lasts a few years, I'll be happy! If it needs to be reapplied again, I will use Rust-Oleum & have it professionally done & still be way ahead financially. Handyman company said they would recommend this product to future clients-truly a 5 star...just hope it lasts-no crystal ball on this aspect of the product.

5 out of 5 stars lots of patience   August 16, 2010

It's not too hard, but it takes lots of time and patience. In addition to the recommended cleaning with bleach, Comet, and Lime-Away, I used a razor blade to scrape away old caulk, paint drips, and even stubborn soap scum. Then when I was roughing up the surface with 400 grit sandpaper I would find spots that I missed and had to re-scrape.

I liked the fact that this kit is much more simple than others on the market. There's two cans in the box; you stir them separately and then pour the smaller can's contents into the bigger can and stir it again. Much better than some of the other kits that require heating the cans or cooling them or whatever.

For painting itself, I used a small 6-inch roller with a smooth-surface cartridge. This worked well, except for the bottom corners of the tub. I used a 2-inch foam roller for the corners, but here's my advice on foam brushes: don't use them for too long with this paint! I tried to use a 6-inch roller made out of foam (advertised for super-smooth surfaces), but about 2 hours later, when I was finishing up, the foam started to disintegrate, leaving tiny little pieces of foam on the paint. So use foam only for the corners and do it at the end of the job.

I had a full fiberglass bathtub/shower combination (bathtub plus 3 shower walls), and one kit is not enough. One kit is enough for just a bathtub, or one kit is enough for a shower stall, but you'll need two kits for a combination tub/shower.

Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the results; the white paint covered up the almond-colored tub and shower quite well, even with the stains that were there from 30 years of neglect.
